Okay what the hell. The free hackspace MacBook (it was from a swap shop) works!

This is a 2010 MacBook Pro, that apparently has a dead enough battery that the only solution was to hold the power button down and then insert the charger!

(It's also on its side because the old owner lost most of the screws...)
